Doux exfoliant is an exfoliating (peeling) lotion. It removes dead, dull skin cells at the surface of the skin. Fruit acids are the key ingredient of this lotion. (I will discuss fruit acids in a later post). Fruit acids work by dissolving the “kit substance” that makes dead skin cells cling together. Common fruit acids are : glycolic acid, lactic acid (from milk, nowadays produced sythetically), mandelic acid (from almonds) and salicylic acid (similar to aspirin). By removing the upper layer of dead skin cells, a new, fresh, healthy layer apperars. And this makes quite a difference !

The main advantage of this type of product (also referred to as “acid toners”), is the absence of abrasive particles. In my opinion, these can easily hurt/irritate skin. The combination of hydrating, exfoliating and soothing ingredients make this a very mild, but also very effective product. Although Clarins advises to use the product 2 times a week, I believe you can go up to 4 or even 5 times.

About the active ingredients:

Glycolic acid, from sugar cane, removes the dead skin cells and stimulates collagen production. Of all the fruit acids, it has the smallest molecule and penetrates deep into our skin. Excellent for dry skin types and anyone seeking for an “anti-ageing” effect.

Tartaric acid (from wine) and salicylic acid work in synergy with the glycolic acid. Salicylic acid can penetrate pores and has a deep cleansing action.

Arginine is a so-called essential amino acid and plays an important role in the production of collagen. Collagen is part of our connective tissue and is responsible for the firmness of our skin. In cosmetic products it acts as an anti-oxidant (cell protector).

Tamarind extract is skin soothing and hydrating. It is said to be as powerfull as hyaluronic acid at hydrating our skin, which makes it a plant-based alternative to hyaluronic acid.

“Lamier blanc” or white nettle, is rich in tanines and flavonoids. Tanines have a pore-refining as well as anti-oxidative action and flavonoid also are anti-oxidants. They have a cell protecting function.

Texture: it’s a toner, so it’s fluid, like water.

Slightly fragranced (lovely!).

Natural? No, but Clarins is a plant-based brand, so lots of beneficial plant extracts.

Good for dry skins, oily skins, in fact every skin will benefit from this product.

Plus: very effective and mild. Improves texture and color (think pigmentation). Improves the penetration of your skin care products. Easy to use.

Minus: might irritate/dry skin if you over-use it.

A must-have !!!
